A couple of more from today

Gorgeous as always!
My wife wants to go to a cat refuge next week. A little worried as I will be shooting through glass if I bring the camera. Is this similar to that or is it open air at the zoos you go to?

Thanks NS. I shoot through glass, a lot. In this series the only one shot through glass is the gorilla, but a lot of the stuff I take at the zoo is through glass. Opinions vary on this one but I can share a couple of things I found from my own experience. The first thing I discovered is that you might as well leave the CPL at home, it really doesn't do much for you trying to shoot through pexiglass, the stuff is too thick and reflects in multiple layers.

I've found my best results are to actually step back a little, before I shoot I check and see if I can see any reflections. If I can I'll move either right or left a little and try changing the angle at which I'm shooting just slightly. With a little trial and error I can usually find a spot where I can minimize the reflections, and by stepping back a bit and shooting wider than I need I try to push the reflections towards the outer edges so I can just crop them out completely later.

Hope that helps.

Thanks robbins. I don't own a single filter, so leaving the CPL at home won't be a problem. I was also thinking of bringing some wipes just in case it's hard finding a spot that isn't all smudged up. I guess I am more worried about the condition of the glass itself more than anything, knowing my pictures will only be as good as the glass they use for display windows.

Well usually unless they are just covered in filth you'll be ok, and generally at least at my zoo they do a .. well, fairly ok job of cleaning them regularly enough that it isn't too bad.

All nice, but I really like the eagle (?) Lee
