Made a new friend and asked her to pose for pictures to test a few new lenses. These were shot with a mixed of 50 f1.4 and 85 f1.4 between 1.4 and 1.6

The weather was kind of weird, raining and thunder storm 1 minute, clear and sunny the next.

I like these James. The 1st one works well with the heavy sky, and the second is particularly good. Great pose, cute look.

Shooting like this at those apertures is always a challenge. The focus maybe isn't spot on in the 4th shot? Hard to tell at this resolution on this tablet perhaps, but nice work overall.

I feel sorry for the Canon crowd, us Nikon users have it made.

The 50 f1.4G is sharp even at f1.4 on my D800. Obviously it's not f9 sharp but sharp relative to other f1.4 lenses at wide open. CA is typical for any fast lenses at wide open. My 85 and 35 f1.4G's seem to be better at controlling it, but nothing that Lightroom can't fix

It's very versatile and cheap. I'm probably going to use it for 90% of what I do.

Nice work. #4 is the one I like the least...a combination of her makeup (so you get some rough skin and lines) and then a narrow DoF (which I usually love with a lot of portraits but in this case part of her and the flour is out of focus and that distracts in the this instance). I agree with the comments about cutting off the top of her head.

Now...you want to really push that aperture and go narrow DoF? Get her to lay down or recline and then focus just on her eyelashes at f1.4. Make sure there are some nice complimentary and dreamy colors around her to go with her dark lashes and hair. You'll get some divine results.

Just wanted to say, I LIKE the umbrella shot, with her cut off at the bottom, deliberately, and then that huge "stack" of ominous rain clouds above here, looming so tall! Nice idea, worked out well, and the clear umbrella really is a nice element; being able to see through to the background and the trees is a nice little visual delight that an opaque umbrella would not have given.

The pose in #4 is not flattering for her at all but I like the organic feel of it. I will convert it to BW and call it art.

Yeah @Derrel, that's also my favorite. I've shot so many of these so I enjoy something slightly different once in a while lol

I have no idea what an "organic feel" is, but i really like 4 and 5. Even if her head was cut cropped out at the top.

It means candid, unprocessed, natural. Obviously I know it was posed and Instagram filter applied.

Photography is crazy. Cut a little head off along with a few digits in the same picture, and we may not notice or only point out one of two.

#1 is really nice. Was it actually raining on her as that was shot?
