I always shied away from Fog pictures, simply because back in the old days of film, I never came close to what I originally saw. This morning I was greeted with a truly foggy morning of major proportions. No way was I going to drive in rush hour traffic to get to my original planned shoot. So I bit the bullet, sucked it up, and headed to a close bye nature preserve.

While the original RAW images were much better then I thought they would be, I still had quite a lot of issues which I took care of using Nikon Capture NX 2.3. Here's the 3 images I thought were good enough to post on TPF. All comments, suggestions, likes and dislikes are more then welcomed.

I really like the first one. The last 2 could have had a better composition. My eyes wonder for a focus point and is drawn to the fog where there is no detail. Cool fog!

J mejia17. Thanks. That's my biggest problem with fog pictures. The fog effect is the subject of the picture, but it's so hard to make it the center focus of the picture.

Joel... Love #1... sweet!

#2.. did you get a vertical shot of just that tree on the left (close to the vertical 3rds line) with its reflection?. That would have been lovely, leaving out the bush!

#3 I love the way it fades off into the distance, but without a solid foreground subject, it just doesn't hold the eye.

Charlie, thanks for your insight. I really struggled with the fog shots. I tried just close ups of trees shrouded in the fog, but they looked horrible in PP. I made a conscience effort to have a foreground subject of strong colors to offset the fog effects, hence, nearly all the pictures came out like 2 & 3. I even had a few pictures with the sun starting to peak out of the fog, and it's reflection in the water, but as you can see the water has no real color either, and the two "suns" looked and behaved like hot spots.

Going to give it another try as it seems that the foggy season is finally here. I have a few prime locations that should produce some interesting pictures.
