I would have tried to take the photo right as your friend was turning at the "apex" of that farther curve (2nd curve turning right if he's walking away, 1st curve turning left if he's walking towards you). That positioning within the composition would have prevented his silhouette from getting "lost" in the trees and would have created a much clearer focal point.
I really like the idea though :thumbup:

The problem was that you knew the dog was there, but with the contrasty light, the dog's presence is not as clear to the viewer of the photo, and if both the dog and the person were in the beam of light, there would have been no doubt. That said, you visualized the image well - just the timing was a bit off.
