A shady country lane

This is a country road here in southern New Jersey. Doesn't quite fall into most people's perception of the state. Heck, ya can't even see any chemical refineries...

I think the focus is on the trees and the bark. I would have composed this photo from the middle of the road with the trees on either side.

Good shot... but I also would have gone from the middle of the road.

Not sure I follow your reasoning. From the middle of the road it would have been a fairly nondescript row of trees to the right and left. Trust me, I looked.

I was trying for a perspective shot along the fence rail with the strong shadows between it and the tree line.

Perhaps this one illustrates the point I was trying to make better - later in the day with no-so-harsh light.

That's fine. The late-day sunlight looks much better and accentuates the fence. I would then enhance the photo.
