I think the second photo ever made with the first ever zoom lens, was made using that technique.

I've done it myself on occasion with moving subjects, but there are not a lot of situations where it works well.

Try it with a more isolated subject. In other words a simpler scene that has a single main image element you can almost fill the frame with.
