Adapted lenses

I share something in common with that camera. We are both old timers.
Like the contina, I believe the retina III is also from the 1950s. Its a bit bigger though.

Few weeks ago bought an OM-FX adapter, no brand name, but "made in USA" and this adapter resembles very much the adapter-model the OP has.
My Olympus Zuiko 50mm and 28mm lenses are in absolute mint condition, bought them in 1987, stored them in 1989 with the Olympus OM10 my wife bought because we moved to an other city, forgot this set completely, rediscovered them last January.

I've always used manual focus, but find manual focus with my XE1 really different and something to get used to.
The possibility of using various adapters is nice and gives many possibilities for experiments, don't forget you can also use old bellows for macro and how about (old) 500/800mm MIRROR lenses by Vivitar and Tamron!

Made some snapshots with Zuiko 50mm f/1.8 + adapter, sunny but windy conditions and 2 different pics with a 100% crop.

I think you are right about the dating. But manufacturers used selenium cells well into the 60's. My first camera was a Zeiss Contaflex, their first SLR, also from the 50's. It also had a fixed 45mm lens. The 50's saw the introduction of some great cameras.

As a bonus, the retina can be used to detonate remote explosives.
Cant use adapted lenses on it though.
