Hi all,

I took some pictures at the weekend with my Fuji HS20 and I'm looking for some advice on them if you don't mind?

With this one, it's all a it dark. It was a sunny day but the lily was in a pond that was in a sheltered corner though this should have been brighter. How would I brighten up the original shot? I can brighten it up on the computer but I want to know how I could have brightened it when taking the photo. Adjusting ev is my guess?

On a few photos I got these little bright marks at the bottom of the image sometimes, how do I avoid these? I'm assuming it's a sun flare of some sort, would using the lens hood that came with the camera stop this?

wider aperture, slower shutter speed would be my guess for the first one. the opposite would be true for the second one. it seemed the camera metered the light for the dark trees in the center. try changing the metering mode to "all" so that it will try to find a compromise between the bright sky and the dark trees

1.) if you're shooting in semi-auto, there is a thing called "exposure compensation". Try to play with it a little

If you can tell us what exposure (f-stop, ISO, shutter speed) you shot them with, we can give you some specific advice.

For your second shot, I think you are right in thinking that a lens hood would have helped.

Yes. It's lens flare.

Yes, they included a lens hood because a lens hood helps control lens flare.

The only times you don't want the lens hood on the lens is when you are not using the camera or you are using the pop-up flash (the lens hood can cause an unwanted shadow at the bottom of a flash photo.)

Thanks guys, I'll check into all of that. With the lens hood, the camera bag doesn't have a holder for it and it won't fit in the bag. This was my first time out with the camera (photo n00b, this is my first "real" camera) so I didn't know it would be so vital. I'll have a look around for a bag that has a bit more storage space as the one I got is pretty low on storage I got it because it was cheap and I still don't know if I'm going to get into all this so didn't want to splash out a ton of cash to find I stopped using the gear after a month or two.

I was playing with all sorts of stuff that day so I have no idea what settings I used for each shot. I was mainly using aperture mode along with a couple of the auto modes if I remember rightly. I did about 450 photos so couldn't tell what mode took what photo. I guess I could look it up in the exit data on my computer later on.

Thanks again for the tips, I'm finding it so confusing trying to take in all of these different functions but I really want to learn how to do more than point a camera at something and let it do all the work! I should probably post in the beginner forum next time too, I only just realised it was there
