I have a 15" Dell Studio XPS i use for editing at home but on the go I bring a 13" Macbook which fits in my Domke F-2. The Macbook is kind of slow and drives me nuts at times but gets the job done. The Dell i have zero issues with. i7 quadcore, 8GB ram and 1GB video ram is plenty for my needs.

Because you cannot pack the power of a high-end desktop into a laptop.

I have a docking station with an external monitor and other goodies, but the laptop itself just does not have enough ASS!

A photographer friend of mine has an IBM laptop. It's certainly not his primary photo editing machine, but he uses it at weddings to compile a slideshow of the day's photos, to display at the reception.

It's got an IPS display, so it's much better for calibration and accurate tones & colors. The screen can rotate 180 degrees and I believe it's a touch screen as well, so it can also act like a tablet.

Knowing him, it probably cost $3000 or more.

Macbook pros

I have a 16" Lenovo Y650. It has enough horsepower to edit with Lightroom and simple stuff in PS. For everything else I have a custom-built desktop(which everyone should have for real editing/processing)

I use a Lenovo T420 for mobile editing and a Lenovo M58 desktop with 16GB of RAM for a bit more heavy duty stuff. I don't edit much so I don't need anymore than that.

I edit my photos on a 6+ year old, store bought desktop, with 3GB of RAM.

I don't really find it that slow.
It has a load of other problems, like not being able to run longer than a couple hours without inexplicably freezing up...but it runs LR and PS pretty well.

Personally, I think editing on a laptop is a waste. Unless its absolute necessary due to remote location, or only as a starting point with finishing touches being completed at a proper workstation. Of course, if you are docking your laptop at a desk with monitor, that is a different story.

There are plenty of laptops out there these days that will allow more than enough power for photo editing. Heck the i7-2720 quad core mobile processor is found in many 15-17 inch laptops and preforms just as good or better than the last generation top dog desktop i7 CPU's. Pretty much all of the new mobile Intel Sandy Bridge processors rock. They run cool and have integrated graphics built into the CPU if you don't need a powerful video card for gaming.

I have a small 13 inch Sony Vaio SA with a new dual core i5, 8gb RAM and SSD. It works great for editing still. It won't be exporting large quantity RAW files as fast as my 6 core i7 desktop, but it gets the job done if I'm traveling.

I have a decent desktop. i5 2500k stable at 4.6ghz, 8GB of DDR3 Ram, nothing super fancy, but is more than powerful enough for photoshop and vegas, but I would prefer something for quick edits when not at home.
