After a discussion about the clichéness of band photos we decided to do our own shoot. As cliché as possible :-) This is me with the other designers of the Amsterdam based Ad Agency where I work.

Canon 350D with Canon 24mm f2.8, and I'm holding a remote :-)

They're very underexposed. To the point that some of the detail is lost. You may have been going for that dark and moody look, but I think they'd benefit from being brightened.

Compositionally, they're kind of bland. Generic band shots where there might be one guy looking at the camera, and all the other guys are looking in different directions.

You may want to mix it up and get closer. Torso and up shots do a good job of displaying all the band members and having them strongly represented in the scene.

band photos have to be one of the hardest, there are so many different elements you have to work with. Most importantly is the genre (if there is one that is). The first one seems like that weird alternative/indie mix you get from U2 but the second one feels like one of those random shots of sex pistols. If I may propose an idea, if you can manage to get your equipment the first shot would seriously benefit from that sense you would be getting a better idea of the band as a whole, the thing that bothers me about band shots without their stuff is I'm trying to focus on each person individually rather then the band itself as one being, which having the equipment will help with a lot. The second one can be really awesome if maybe you where a bit closer or farther and to the left just a tad. The guy on the left makes that side really heavy while they absence on the right makes that side really light.
