This is a female Pamphobeteus spp. tarantula (females are brown, males purple black) about 16 cm (6 inches) long. She was striding across my lawn after I cut the grass today. Must have been disturbed by the noise or vibration. Anyway I escorted her to dense foliage at the edge of the lawn. Out in the open she would be easy prey for an Andean Motmot or Tarantula hawk wasp.

Oh my........it's huge. I would of escorted myself to another continent :eek:
 
How do you pick them up, do they bite? Yikes, that's a big one.
 
I understand they can bite and it hurts but the venom, designed to liquify insect prey is of no consequence to humans. Lots of people keep them as pets and apparently they can be docile enough to handle if not perturbed. I ain't trying' it though.
