just a guess I'd say a warbler of one kind or another. The bill is screwy. Also check vireo's.

What time of year was this taken?

Thank you all. since posting it has been ID'd as an immature Western Tanager by a local birder.
I hope to get another chance at some photos.

Definitely not a Goldfinch or finch of any type, not a warbler or a vireo. It's a female Western Tanager.

I agree with Hunter, except that it is very similar to transitional adult Goldfinches.

In color they can look similar for sure but it's the bill that's different

Could also be mistaken for a Warbler like this Pine Warbler, bill shape here is different as well.

Yup. But if you look at all about birds site (which I'm guessing many if not most do) and go to photo #8 under Field Marks, you can see why Goldfinch looks like it could be a match. Just saying it's not always easy to tell.

Thanks JacaRanda, I agree there are several birds that look very similar and I totally agree about the All About Birds site. That is the best site out there. They also have a very good app for iPhone & Android called Merlin Bird ID and it's free! My other tool is eBird.com and I still use bird guide books as well. I did get the newest version of Sibley Birds of N.A. and it's a really big improvement over the last version.

I dabble with Merlin, but if I am really in a pinch, I just ask several of the locals that have done Big Years. [emoji3]
