I used a Canon FD SSC 300/5.6 @ f8, ISO 400, hand held, poked out the patio door.


1. Nuthatch 1/200s

2. Sparrow 1/150s

3. Sparrow 1/30s

4. Bluejay 1/160s

I'm certainly not one to critique photography, but these photos are great. I love 2 & 3!

Two and three are great! The first one, the Nuthatch, is tough to catch. To the feeder for a seed and then back to the tree; very quick.

I notice there are other curent threads regarding shooting birds & recomendations for long glass & then Buckster blows that away with his 50mm bird shots.

However, I do find the need for longer glass in most situations & these shots are an example. Conventional wisdom is you need a shutter speed equal to the lens focal length to avoid blur due to camera shake, let alone subject movement. So, in this case, with me using a 300mm lens, I should use a minimum shutter speed of 1/300s. In the shots above, my best speed was 1/200s & my best image was captured @ 1/30s. It sure would be nice to have a long & fast lens but one must do what they can with the equipment they have.
