I was a huge Stephen King fan from the beginning, read everything he wrote and still think that The Stand is one of the best books ever. But over the last 10 years or so, I've just lost interest in his work. I finished the Gunslinger series since I had so much time invested in it, but when he announced that the last book wasn't the last book, I thought, 'it was for me'

Yeah, he can be a bit long winded. I actually think his collections of short stories are his best.

Re-reading a lot of Mark Twain. Bring's an understanding of why he was and is such a great writer.
War and Peace. Tolstoy,,, Doctor Zhivago , Boris Pasternak. love lust and Ural Mountians.

Sort of depends what you like. I just finished "A Brief History Of Time" and started "Humboldt's Gift".

When I'm not sure what I'd like next I just go to a pawn shop or old book store and get anything published by Penguin - always a good read.

Office Girl by Joe Meno is excellent.

Any of the novels by Dana Spiotta, but her Eat the Document, is simply brilliant.

I am a big fan of Paul Auster, and I count his Travels in the Scriptorium and Timbuktu, as two of my favorites by him.

I recently finished 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami and I highly recommend it.

love the Stand! Ever read Swan Song by Robert McCammon? Eerily similar.. both good! On King did you read his Tower series?

Yeah, I read Swan Song and thought the same thing. Also yes on the Tower series, that's what I was calling the Gunslinger series. Part of it was good, part tedious. And I can't decide if the end was genius or lazy

"Treasure Island". Must-read for all, basically.

Treasure Island was a hoot. Book was absolute total crap and massively entertaining.

As for recommendations, you have to at least narrow it by genre...

For me, it's SciFi/Fantasy.

The Song of Ice and Fire series by George RR Martin is the obvious one of late.
Assassin's Apprentice and about 4-5 books into that series is good by Robin Hobb.
Right now I'm reading The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson and it's fantastic.
