Can others edit my Photos
Photos OK to edit
My computer died on Christmas morning of all times. Anyway, I went and purchased a new tower and while we were there, I explained I wanted a monitor good for photography, but on a reasonable budget ($200 or so). I know it's asking a lot.. Anyway, he suggested an LG 27MP35HQ. Does anyone have any experience with this monitor? I really didn't know anything about buying a monitor to edit pics on, but it is an IPS monitor. These must be fairly new, as I don't see many reviews on them. The colors are very vivid, blacks are black, etc. I read somewhere that it only sees 65% of the rgb spectrum (something like that)? I also read read that most "good" monitors see at least 95%. Can someone help me decide whether I need to take this monitor back and get something else that would be better for the money? I consider myself an advanced amateur that is aspiring to a higher standard, if that adds into the equation. Thanks for taking the time.

LG IPS monitors are decent.

You need to calibrate it and that means you need to spend more money on another piece of hardware: Amazon.com : X-Rite CMUNSML ColorMunki Smile : Computer Mice : Camera & Photo

The item I linked is at the low end of the price scale -- you can spend a lot more but this will do a reasonable job.

If you don't calibrate the monitor it doesn't matter if it's good enough for photo. So if you want photo you add the calibrator to the price of the monitor as essential.

As for it's color gamut, what you're looking for is the % of the sRGB color space it can display. Make sure that's the figure you checked.

i wouldn't get too wound up about calibration. Most monitors come out "close enough". If you do a ton of printing it would be a good idea but otherwise it's not needed.

I disagree with that

And so the debate continues... I've edited many photos on my old monitor that had nothing special done to it. I know those pictures will typically print darker. I've been looking at colors, old pics vs. new pics, and blacks vs. grays oh my. I think I have decided I can live with this pretty happily. Thanks so much for the input! I may have to consider calibrating it at some point.

Anyone who has calibrated and compared before and after can testify. ;)
