I think it more closely resembles a Black Swallowtail.

Thanks, it was. I'm not totally happy with the pic, the bg seems weird so I need to experiment with the f/stops a bit.

Yeah, having had a look I believe you're right K.Nicely caught. What species is it. Doubt we get them here.
I'm positive it's a black, female, swallowtail. It has all the classical markings of one and the left wing with the orange dot is covering the orange dot on the right wing. When they aren't over lapping like that they resemble two big eyes.

I thought so at first but the single row marking along the edge led to my choice. I am no expert by any means.
