The B&W conversion isn't bad, perhaps a bit too contrasty but that comes down to your own personal taste. Did you sharpen it? It seems a bit over-crisp to me.

In terms of composition, it seems like you've got two separate subjects squished into one image (the boat going by vs the people on the right). Perhaps if you had chosen a different angle to shoot from -i.e. if you were able to move to the right, and shot the people looking more towards the moving boat - then you would have had a single story/subject that would have worked quite well.
