A portrait of my friend Caleb, who is a very talented drummer in a metal band.

Shot using the original Canon 5D with a Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens attached set to f/10, 1/200th sec, ISO 100. Lit using a single Neewer C-300 strobe at the lowest power setting, with a Neewer 27x20 inch softbox attached, and a silver reflector for fill (which was made using a foam board from the dollar tree with tin foil glued to it).

Nice shot. The lighting and contrast looks perfect

Really like the lighting and skin on this one. He looks sad though. Not because he’s not smiling, just his eyes. He has sad eyes.

Thank you. He's been through a lot, and the goal was for a sort of melancholy renaissance feeling. I appreciate the feedback though; I'd like to say that there were some smiling or happier shots during this shoot, but they all seem to reflect a melancholy sort of feeling (as do most of my portraits now that I'm thinking about it).

Don’t get me wrong the sad eyes really work - it was just an observation as that is the general feeling I get when looking at him. It’s a great portrait. If he’s been through a lot, it seems that you’ve captured a genuine sense of him without having to hit people over the head with it or have him fake it.

Beautifully done set. I feel like each one captures various emotions or aspects of his personality because I wonder about what he's thinking, what's in his life, etc. because there seems to be so much there. Technically well done, composition is good, etc., everything about them is superb.

Thank you so much! In hindsight I wish I'd have had him holding his drum sticks in the waste up portrait; the image I referenced for that shot was a renaissance painting where the subject was holding an apple, but all I wanted to do at the time was mimic the pose without an abject. The drum sticks would have made it better.
