I've ruled out the following.
Green Heron
Least Bittern
American Bittern
Blue Heron

He's about 2/3 the size of a Least bittern so maybe 6" tall.
Sorry about the pic. Best I've got. Matter of fact only one I've got. He's a skittish little guy.
