Has anyone used either of these and if so did you get autofocus?

I have a TC-1401 on my Nikon D850 + Sigma 150-600 Contemporary. AF can work for slow/stationary subjects, but don't expect many BIF shots. I also found it degrades the IQ, especially when cropping. YMMV.

The AF on a D850 is lightning fast and I found is relevant to the AF speed on a 90D.

Yes, focus is slow, and it hunts the entire range. If I were using it for long shots on a regular basis, I would set the lens limiter to 10m-infinity so that it doesn't hunt so much.

Yep, that's what I do. I switch the focus limiter as appropriate. But it's still too slow for action, by the time it finds focus the shot is long gone. I wanted to use it with my FF camera to get the reach, but it's basically unusable for what I do. If I need the reach I'll just use my Canon version (without TC) on my 90D ;)

This is a great lens for the price. It's flexible, light, and affordable. Images are sharp, but IMO the TC sabotages the sharpness when cropping. It may be a different story with an APS-C sensor. The D850 is notorious for showing any flaws in a lens.

I have the Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary with the Sigma 1.4x Teleconverter on a Canon 90D and the autofocus works when they are used together.
I should have said - under what conditions and how well? Does it work in low light and or birds in flight?

I've only tried it in bright conditions. Focus is too slow for BIF. I'll see if I can find one of the shots I did with that setup.

Update: posting the picks in the Wildlife forum

Of course you live in Texas - don't get as many opportunities as I do to photograph in awful light!

If you didn't have the teleconverter would you buy it?

Yes, that is essentially what I did, and personally, I don't regret the purchase. Sigma had a refurbished one for sale on their website, so I ordered it from them. I just need to remember to put it in my bag, so that when I go out to the lake, I can use is on some of the long distance shots. If you have a photo shop that rents out equipment, you could see if they have one available for you to try.

Today is an overcast day, so I tried a shot on my dog in the back yard. The AF struggled to find the target, and I had to manually tweak it once it was aquired, so the darker the situation, the more the lens-teleconverter combo has to seek to focus. Will attach a pic in a moment.

A couple of shots of Daisy at 30 ft (10 m). Conditions: overcast. f/9 1/640 840mm. Manually tweaked final focus, but the focus is still soft.
