Ah, but increasing exposure would loose detail in the feathers on the back.

You are right about that. I guess I was looking more at the face which IMO (FWIW) is what I look at first when looking at any birds. My eyes are drawn to their eyes.

Open the mid tone histogram just a little and it will clean it up.
