I think the 2 things you mentioned in your conclusion (harsh light and placement of cup and teapot) are right on with what I might have done differently. I will say that you did a good job with exposure considering the bright midday sun and the light colored teapot with dark background.

The setting seems very appropriate for the subject, however I would have liked to see what it would look like from say 1-2 feet to the right, so you saw more lillypads and less grass in the pond. The grass seems to demand my attention for some reason.
