Jeff, you are somewhat hampered by the same issue as Lorrilia in directing your focus. In this case, another stop open (smaller number) would have increased the depth of field to cover what the autofocus wasn't. I shoot all butterfly shots sans those in flight on manual focus and I always increase the DoF by a stop so I get the full range of all the parts (antennae, wing tips, etc.).
