Compressing files?

Hello all, I used to use my Microsoft Office Picture Manager or whatever to compress my images for web use etc, it was quite easy...but now my trial of that program has now expired. I have DPP and noticed it gives you an option to adjust the dpi.. does lowering this do the same thing as if I were to compress it through the other program?
