Hi,
I have been lurking around here for some time and really enjoy the site. I am trying to learn more about digital photography.

Two weeks ago I purchased a D5100 and a SB700 flash. I really like this equipment but do have a question that I cannot find an answer for in the manual nor CD.

In all Mode Dial positions except Auto and using the built in flash or the SB700 the exposure meter indicates under exposure and when a picture is made it's under exposed. Are other D5100s like this? My D50 isn't.

Does anyone know a solution?

Thanks and Regards, Keith

Welcome to the forum.

Check if you have inadvertently set a negative 'Exposure Compensation'.

Mike, Thanks for the reply. I have checked the exposure compensation several times but the meter still indicates a minus. With the flash on and holding down the flash compensation button when you turn the command dial you can get a + or - F stop number indication change but the exposure meter does not change.

Graystar,
I have learned something today. After reading your very good answer I installed my 50mm f1.4 on the camera and sure enough the exposure meter read "0". Thanks a lot for helping me.
