Yes. The camera is malfunctioning and needs to be repaired.

Can you post an image from automatic mode? Keith may be right and it needs repaired, however the manual mode issue sounds correct and not broken.
A WELL lit room is not WELL lit to a camera. you'd need to be somewhere around ISO 6400 and a shutter of 1/125, aperture of 2.8 to get exposure in an average lit room.

I need to be able to read the FULL exif data from the image-not just the settings that the camera chose but all other things dialed into it that you may not realize are there.

What is the ISO set to? What is the aperture set to? Have you tried a different lens?
