D90....why so much price fluxuation at B&H?

I'll be buying a D90 in probably 2-3 weeks (upgrading my D70s) so naturally, I've been checking the price about every week at B&H. A month ago it was 869.99. Then it went to 899.99. Then last week I checked and it was back down to 879.99. Now I checked tonight and it's back up to 899.99. Why are they adjusting the price on such a regular basis back and forth? I suppose that when I get the money, I'll just wait until they do one of the random price drops?? Do they change the price on certain days? I just find it kind of odd to go back and forth so often.

Simple, economics. Demand goes up, price rises; demand drops, price drops. I had the same thing happen to me. I bought my 80-200mm for $920, and then in the next few weeks it dropped to $870, and now it's up to $925.

I don't know *what* is going on. I was going to order 2 more SB-600s from them last week. From April 2008 to December 2008 they were under $175 now they are $225, thats over a 28% increase! To heck with that. SB-600s are priced WAY higher than I will ever pay for them.

With this economy being crap the way it is, one would think prices would stay the same or drop a little, not go up.

Exactly my thoughts. With this economy I would think demand would be going down which would cause price to go down. I uderstand the whole price and demand thing, however, I didn't know that companies adjusted their prices for price and demand every single week. There's no way that you could tell a difference in overall price and demand on a week by week basis and be very accurate. What happens when you have a good week and bad week. This is why stuff is figured in quarters to give a broad range to let stuff "even out".

Right now, the Yen is strong against the dollar, but why the 28% difference, I can't say.

The price of inputs has gone up dramatically in a lot of industries this year. That could have something to do with price instability.

Yup it's all messed up now - I was going to buy the 14-24mm for $1469, and it just shot up to $1649 and then $1999 in 1 FREAKIn" MONTH!!!

I guess I'll keep on waiting. . .

SB-600 went up to $225 at B&H?! Damn... it doesn't really matter though since it's back-ordered at the moment, plus Adorama's got em for $220 and free shipping (whooopee....... [/sarcasm]) so I don't see that price lasting.

God Jerry I wish I had known you were looking for a couple of SB600s. I saw two on our Craigslist for $240. I would have snatched them up for you.
