Dark photography help?

Hello all, Ive been wanting to creat a self portrait of myself that I guess will fall under the category "dark photography" basically I want to take a picture that looks somewhat like the one below. I take pictures as a hobby and have nothing fancy, just a canon rebel, nifty fifty and 18-55 and ps cs2, any help, tips, advice, or links toward the right direction would be greatly appreciated! thanks

Just FYI: posting them is a TPF violation. Posting links to them is OK, the images themselves not OK.

They are all pretty much one light, strategically placed, and considered to be 'low-key' images.

Camera/lens....doesn't matter. It's all about lighting.

Google around for low key lighting techniques.

This website: Welcome to Strobox - Create, Share, Learn has a bunch of photos along with lighting setup descriptions and diagrams for them. If you see a photo you like, you can learn exactly how it was done. (thanks to whoever posted that here back in the day, site rocks!)
