Why do black and white photos convey more emotion?

Perhaps it's because we are not distracted by the colors, so we can concentrate on other things, like the expression of the subject etc.
I think that's probably true in this case, as it looks like the background would have has some bright color to it.

Might be an idea to crop both of these square and simply get rid of a good bit of the distraction.

I actually like the first one as it is. Interesting bokeh in the background imho. The 2nd one looks a little blown out to me.
