Does this photograph say anything to you?

So, I haven't really been using my LX5 much in low light situations, because, well, it has a tiny sensor and isn't very good in low light unless on a tripod, and what's the point of a point and shoot with a tripod? But anyway, kinda got a little restless last night and decided to go for a walk and just grabbed it and thought I'd maybe try to experiment to see if there were any settings I could get good pictures with in extremely low light.

For the most part they were just random pictures of various objects.

However, something struck me about this image, to the point where I wanted to see if it was just me, or if it strikes other people too?

I didn't really think too much about the image at the time, as I was mostly playing with settings on the camera. I probably wouldn't have shot it at ISO80 (this was 12:30 AM last night). Also, had I been more careful, I probably would have lined myself up as more centered, so the lines would be straighter. I am considering going back tonight to reshoot it with my dSLR if there's any merit.

edit: its also possible that this only says something to me because these are luxury apartments, but from the ground entrance they look more or less like a jail. So, it's possible that is making the image more striking to me, but it wouldn't really come across to someone who had only seen this image.

I was struck, certainly, by the contrast between the banner "LOFTS" and the jail-like gates. The gates make it feel like a really bad hotel, a "rent by the hour" sort of place, or a hotel catering to the very very poor with "rent by the week" rates.

Perhaps this isn't true everywhere, but the the USA the word 'lofts' usually describes newly built smallish luxury to semi-luxurious apartments, aimed at younger people making pretty good money. So, at least here, the contrast between the overall look and the banner is dramatic.

Yeah, that's exactly the case here. I just wish there was maybe one more visual cue to how nice the apartments are supposed to be from this angle. Perhaps tomorrow I can get one of the yuppies drunkenly stumbling in, or walking a toy poodle or something.

well, its not really vignetting as much as it is the way the light is all coming from the middle.

ha, the funniest part about that is that it's actually a really upscale area (though it's sort of close to a not quite as nice area). People walk up and down this area all the time and I've never heard of really any crime in it beyond what's normal in any metro area.

I'll be interested in seeing a retake version.

Ah, okay, thanks. I used to work on Howell Mill Road, but down towards the other end of it, across the interstate. I was the office manager in a women's clothing wholesale factory outlet kind of store.
