About the only way I have ever gotten close is in a kayak. Any other time, they take off as soon as they see me.

Thanks. We have tons of them since there is a nesting ground on the lake not too far away. Where I took this is a little inlet isolated from the lake that has a walkway and you can get within 20' of them and they are not skittish there.
