What's new

down by the lakeshore C&C

those are very odd crops

Not sure what #1 is..

I like # 2 but you could add a bit more contrast so it's not so flat, and straighten the horizon.

#3 is nice but yeah, it is an odd crop.

#4 I think the house is creepy, it has a really cold feeling to it, I wouldn't want to go in it. Nothing really to say about the picture lol

The cropping you did on the image...ie the dimensions of it, are pretty odd, mainly for 3-4

Yea I know what cropping is. I was hoping you could explain what You wish was different about the photo. 3 & 4 were the only.ones cropped and they were cropped vertically. Thanks for the responses. T.

Oh and yea, I tried to capture the creepiness of the abandoned house miss cream. Thanks again

No, you definitely cropped 3&4, and they're cropped horizontal bro.

Check it, see how the longer flat one is horizontal? And the straight up line is vertical?

I just said I cropped 3 and 4. I know what horizontal and vertical is. I'm a construction engineer for Gosh sakes. I shortened 3 and 4 vertically. I don't understand what you are trying to prove here. Is a vertical crop reffered to an image that has been made longer vertically rather horizontal as my images?

That's what I was trying to prove, there.

The issue I have with those odd crops is that they make both images feel really tight.
And it was hard to tell that you are a structural engineer from your name and posts, so please forgive people here if they can't read into your life behind the monitor :D

1- I think the image is a bit dull, too much going on and yet not enough. It seems you wanted to focus on textures and/or patterns, but focused on both of those and neither really.
The branch bits at the top and the grass at the bottom just add to the amount of visual stimulus in the image.
Looking at it, I'm personally drawn to the right side where you have a brick wall and pieces missing. I think focusing on just that, zooming in, and using the curve of there would be pretty interesting

2- Intersting setting shot and i can see this working with a bunch of other images of the area in a series or set. But stand alone, not sure. I would of maybe move that sign to the left of the frame and done more with the wood ramp/railing

3- Tight crop. The horizon is really tight up there, not much breathing room. My eye is drawn straight into the void in the middle, but I believe you tried to make the pieces of rock on either side the subject? Not sure

4- Comes off as more snapshotty, taken from standing straight up and straight on the house. Its an ok shot, but nothing really more for me.

Definetly agree with everything. Im just starting out so learning what is visually stimulating and makes a good a picture a good picture is something im learning slowly. Ima go back and get rid of the crops for #3 & #4. #1 I am very much drawn to more abstract textures, patterns, shadows, ect ect ect. I tried to capture this for too far away and ended up creating a sort of boring picture by focusing in on everything in the frame. Thanks for the comments! Helped me out a ton!

In that fourth picture; if it truly is abandoned and you would not be trespassing, you might try taking pics from different angles and see if you can get some shadows. Maybe the backside of the house. Maybe even try B&W. Might add to the creepiness(is that a word?)!

Is the tower in the zoo closed? That used to be an excellent place to get some cool shots. I've taken a few from up there of the Chicago skyline, but that was quite some time ago. Of course, you would have to pay to get into the zoo. I looked at your pictures on Flicker and I know Fedders Alley and the apartment building on the beach. Fedders Alley runs through Washington Park and the Condos are, or were, straight out from the Yacht Club. I worked there for several years. Even spent some time in the "Big House"!! Thru work of course!

Its awesome to see someone else from nw indiana on here! haha where exactly are you from?
