Came across this fella while out on an early morning walk with the dog in the Perthshire countryside

Yeah, great to see. Just stood there and stared at me and then jogged off.

The Roe's in that area don't seem to be so skittish as they are up where I live. Dunno why, as it's a pretty sparsely populated part of the country so they can' be that used to humans.

. I thought that the deer without antlers were females...

No, males cast their antlers every year so they have none for several months and they grow back for the rut. Juvenile males don't have either.

If you look closely at it's right (left as we look) side of it's head, there is a little promontory emerging. I could be wrong but I took that to be the start of an antler.
