An Earthship is a brand of passive solar earth shelter that is made of both natural and upcycled materials such as tires. These structures are intended to be "off the grid" homes, with minimal reliance on public utilities and fossil fuels. They are constructed to use available natural resources. especially energy from the sun and rain water.

The buildings in this collection are located in Tres Piedras, New Mexico--just outside of Taos. Today, there are more than 2,000 of these Earthships around the world.

Nice set! I've always liked Adobe style homes, especially ones with built in Adobe fireplaces, they're so cool looking and last much longer than a Maytag. ;)

I toured the first earthship in the 1970s.
the guy who pioneered them is an interesting dude (if he is still around.)

They were determined to build with reclaimed materials and all throughout the 1970's in school they promoted them heavily here.

NM building codes now have entire sections on them, but are largely overridden with IBC.

But they are really interesting and cool for what they have made with them.
But what was also really cool was the fact they added on and extended some of the homes for years.
