Easter Sunday Nature Hike

This Easter I went exploring in the Angeles National Forest. Of course, I went during the middle of the day so the lighting was all ew but I did get to try out some macro photography.

I used a borrowed Canon 100mm f/2.8, which I think has some focus issues. idk. At wide apertures it would lock focus and still be out of focus. Stopped down, it worked great, though.


this is a common Western Fence Lizard. Although there isn't much that's spectacular about the reptile, it does have one interesting attribute. Its blood kills Lyme disease. This natural defense is part of the reason why Lyme disease has not affected California as greatly as other parts of the USA.

They're also called "blue bellies" because of their subtle, yet striking markings.

I didn't have a tripod so I couldn't do that wooshy long exposure thing.

Adorably small pinecones

I don't know what kind of caterpillar this is. I tried looking it up but there are infinite species of them.

Yeah I like that one too. I do wish that the branch on the right was a little farther over but meh. I'm just glad the sun worked with me and not against me lol

I believe that is a Morning Cloak caterpillar.

Either that or a Buckeye caterpillar. There are so many that look similar lol
