External hard drive vs flash memory

The boat is a 38 foot Cabo Rico (hence Cabo Sailor), while the ride can get rough we normally stow everything in its place to avoid flying missiles. Actual water should not be a problem but the salty humidity is. For that reason I went with the Pentax K20D with its weather seals. An external hard drive I would probably keep in a Pelican case with some silica gel or some other dessicant.
