Greetings:

I'm always shooting sunsets and here the sky is usually a bright orange/purple but I can never seem to capture that vivid color. Any suggestions on a good filter to use with my Nikon D80?

I wouldn't bother with a filter to enhance sun sets. It's much easier (and more flexible) to do it with software on the computer.

A split or grad filter might come in handy, to help even out the difference between the sky & ground.

Much of the time, you can bring out deeper colors by underexposing. When shooting sunsets, it's a good idea to bracket your shots...take several with different exposures and then you can pick what you like best.

also understanding exposure has a portion of it dedicated to metering tough light situations like sunsets, reflective sunsets, dusk etc. it's helped me a lot to grab great sunset photos.

Try bracketing.

It will give you an idea on exposure.

You will tend to find that most light metering systems in camera's will over expose. Try shooting in Manual exposure and under expose three shots from 1 to 3 stops.
