Hmmm, I am trying to figure out why this photo looks so FLAT to me. I dont know if the birds position, or the angle you got, but there is no depth at all to this finch. That with the dark on dark, with dark on top of dark makes this photo not do anything for me. That could just be me though, lets see what some other people say.

Clarify what you mean when you say there is no depth. I am quite confused by this observation as I see tons of depth in the bird itself, in the breakdown of foreground a slightly less bojkeh-ed middleground and a quite bokeh-ed background. There is depth to the color in the foreground compared to the mid/back ground and the bird has depth in its feathers..hmmmmmmmmmm.

I cant think of a better way to describe it, it just looks flat, the bird itself. I think it might just be the angle you got him/her at. Is this a male or female by the way?

Like I said, it could just be me, so I wouldnt be worried about it unless a couple people say the same thing.

have no idea as to gender but for lack of great color would suspect a female.
