He's out of focus I think the focus falls on the hands and not on the eyes.

yeah, AF lense on a crappy dx body! Cannot wait to upgrade!

Upgrading will not insure you get your focus right I would nail it with what you have before you upgrade

with the D60's small viewfinder and at low light it is impossible to see where exactly the focus is. too bad, I always take 3-5 shots of a good oppertunity while changing the focus, hoping that I have 1 great pic at least. If I would have upped the ISO and Upped the FStop from 1.6 to something higher my dof would have been better.

thanks for the C&C that's what I need to learn. At least my brain has been turned on and tickled! I am still fresh

Turn a light on, focus, and then turn it off. I like your picture but having the baby's eyes in sharp focus is the most important aspect of such a picture and is the key ingredient to a great portrait. All other aspects can be "off" except focus. It absolutely has to be sharp here. Keep up the good work and practice practice practice until you can achieve better focus. Never blame your equipment, ever. It's more than capable of achieving tack sharp focus.

I have found when photographing my 8 month old daughter that my focus is better when I use a single spot to focus on the space between her eyes versus using all 11 of the focus points on my D90. I also make sure to be aware of the focus plane and keep my DOF sufficiently deep to get her tack sharp.
