My college men's soccer team playing their double header this Saturday. My little ol' 80-200 2.8 wasn't nothing compared to the pro that come with a 400mm... I was going to ask him to let me mount my D7000 there for ****s and giggles but I didn't have the courage.

Both shots are ok, but could use a tighter crop, would really look much better. As for the pro who uses a 400mm, he will be able to grab images from further out, but in tight you can shoot with your 80-200mm and end up with good stuff. It's just a matter of using what you have awaiting for the action to come to you, as you did if the 2 posted pictures.

Yeah, he had 3 camera set up. I had on with my 80-200 and feet. I was running up and down sideline trying to get some action shots tight in. this is a close up that I was able to get

It is close but not as good as the other 2 you posted. Sports like soccer, because of the size of the field are helped by using a long lens, not like everything, it is not necessary all the time. If you can shoot from the back line, you can end up with some really nice shots around the net, especially when corner kicks are involved. I've always found with soccer if you start running up and down the side lines you end up missing more photos than you get.

Yeah I was able to get on the side line (small d3 school) I just wasn't sure about the position as I wanted their facial expressions in the photo not just their back.
