I am doing a fitness model shoot this weekend with a family member. I've seen the examples she's given me from different models and motivational posters, etc. What kind of lighting schemes could you recommend for this kind of thing? I was thinking trying to really emphasize muscular definition and different things like that.

You could be a little more specific KmH.

That's a very open ended question but you did mention one thing that could help us push you in the right direction. "emphasize muscular definition". This implies harsher lighting, at more extreme angles in a way to cast shadows over the muscles and expose the tone.

Basically if you hit a guy with abs of steel front on with a massive soft box you won't see any abs at all.

I know this is a little late for the weekend you were shooting on, but if you're still working on it: Use a smaller light modifier, or, no light modifier at all. Point you light so it skims across the muscles rather than pointing it directly at them.
