Anyone else have any advice on a flash for a Canon 10D. Sigma vs Canon?? My only flash is a 420EX Speedlite but looking for something stronger. I'll keep my 420 for my backup.

Next one up is a 580EX, not sure if the other makes give you full ETTL, plus the 420 will work as a slave to the 580.

Actually the 550EX is next up (the ojne I just bought for my 10D rig) and considerably cheaper than the 580. True the 580EX is the new flagship but the 550EX is still a cadillac in the Canon family of Speedlights ;)

Sorry bud, thought they'd discontinued them - I got a 420 the other week, trying to make it work for me at the mo, took some photos last weekend in a pub and got better results from using f1.8 and 400iso than with the flash - need to practice!!

I realize that, but they are still plenty available and much more powerful than the 420. Even the 550 has a learning curve to it. If you have $500 laying around though go for a 580 by all means. I picked up a brand new in the box 550 for under $400 though.

Thanks for the info...shopping around, actually found the 550 for $307 and the 580 for $379 on B&H. I know if you shop retail the 580 goes for $479. Can't beat B&H prices...

I don't think the 10D can take the 580 though...any thoughts before i plunk out $400!!

Wow those critters REALLY came down in price since I bought mine (only like 2 months ago! :( )

Now you have me thinkiong about selling my 550 and upgrading already!

I believe the 580 will work on your 10D, and be almost fully compatible. The only miss match is that the 580 is capable of using E-TTL II metering but the 10D only has E-TTL I technology. You would still get all the other benefits of the 580 over the 550...more powerful, faster recycle times etc.
