IMO, having the other people reinforces her concentration,
PPing is great altho I might burn down the shoes a bit, they are bright and sort of clunky looking where she is so sleek.

If it was another athlete then I would have agreed that it assists with that 'focused' look.

The guy doesn't bother me at all; he's part of the scene and not out of place, imo.

I agree with Lew that this is an excellent photo.

I'm thinking it looks like it was shot indoors in low light; it might have been better to adjust settings to not have an ISO so high to cause a lot of noise because I think the noise takes away from having a sharp image.

I've done sports and events and it's a matter of timing - getting set and then watching until people move in and out of the scene (in and out of your viewfinder) to release the shutter when subjects are where you want them in the frame. With this one I think the guy in the white T shirt is a distraction because I don't see how he adds to the photo; having another athlete in the image can work if they seem part of the photo. I would have probably waited til that guy moved on and got out of the picture (this one anyway, he might have worked in the photo if he was watching the race etc.)

Thanks for the comments, everyone. I didn't have much choice about the starting official - he was going to be there until the start of the race, and I didn't want to risk losing the shot by waiting for him to move. Sharon, the grain was added in during PP (and it was outdoors, not indoors). If you look at the other images I posted of that meet, you'll see that the grain is very well controlled by my camera and my pre-processing.

Cool photo. My main nit is the white bar connecting the OOF girl's hand to the subject's elbow.

You guys are talking about digital noise, not grain in film emulsion... I didn't realize it was being added but I didn't see the rest of the set of photos. That's one of the things about sports, there are officials and posts and signs etc. that it takes thinking about the framing and vantage point and timing so subjects and objects are where you want them in the image.

Yes, and there are a lot of things that just can't be controlled - much as we might like to.
