Freedom City

Another photo of an unfortunate. Why?

A very poignant juxtaposition. It's not my style but I can appreciate Lew's point of view and always consider the message (as I see it). In this case I see that "Freedom" comes with a price.

I think a caption that states the location would add to this message.

Another photo of an unfortunate. Why?

One of the biggest moral dilemmas in street photography. In this case the person is virtually unidentifiable, and serves as a sort of "generic" person of the streets, which I think is okay to utilize.

There are many, many photographers that document the struggles of the homeless. I've seen quite a few photographers partake in years long projects with this subject. Bringing awareness and concern of the 'not so merry' plight of others is the basic concept of journalism photography.

C/C always welcome

"The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread. "

Anatole France

I LOVE the quotation you added, I've not see that one before. I'm not sure whether I should laugh at the absurdity of sink into despair.

I agree that awareness of specific issues is important but too many photos of the homeless don't bring any new information or awareness, they are just scavenging the person's circumstances to get emotional impact that the photo doesn't have on its own.
That is 'poverty porn.'
When I shoot people who are in tough life circumstances, I am trying to make a point that doesn't depend on the dirty clothes, bad hygiene, etc. of an individual.
