The flash is about a year old, never been dropped or miss-handled. I don't really use it much it just site in its soft case. I have 2 Sto-Fen-600 omni bounce diffusers.

Just recieved my flash

few hours ago

thanks noquarter it all looks good soo far

but for this .. when i turn on the flash my shutter speed is limiting to 1/200 in manual why is this so ??

i use a Nikon D3100 ..if i turn off the flash i can go to what ever shutter speed i wanna go .. if i turn on the flash the shutter speed is limited to 1/200 how much ever the image is exposed

why so ?

so i can never go above 200 shutter speed when using this external flash ???

so if i want a pic at f1.8 on a bright day the only other thing i can do to decrease the over exposure compensation is to decrease my ISO ??

i heard we have grainy pics at low ISO (like at 100) ....then how do i do it ?? at 1/200 shutter speed ?

Blair is saying with the flash hooked up to your camera body, the max sync speed is 1/200. So if you remove or turn off the flash, you can go higher. But with it hooked up and on, the fastest you can shoot is 1/200.

Actually, mounted using ttl it is 1/60 max, off camera is 1/250 generally

Nikon bodies have the option to use FP-Sync which will allow you to use higher than the rated sync speed of your camera. Essentially what it does, is turns your flash into a fast-strobing light for the duration of the shutter allowing for higher sync speeds. Canon's equivalent is HSS or High Speed Sync.

I'm not as knowledgeable in Nikon cameras, but googling FP-Sync and your camera model should be a good start.

As far as FSquare's post goes, maybe he's referring to film cameras. But that is not true for digital AFAIK. Most sync speeds are 1/200 - 1/250s on Digital bodies.

No, it's not, that may be your default set in an automated mode, but it most certainly is not a maximum. The max without entering fp sync(which is available on the SB-600) and allows you to pick any shutter speed is 1/200th. With FP sync, the camera fires several weaker bursts to properly expose the entire sensor as the shutter is traveling across it. At speeds greater than 1/200th of a second, the entire shutter is never open at the same time, so one flash burst will not expose the entire sensor, other wise known as flash sync speed.

As far as the D3100, I don't know where the default setting is for the automated modes. It's usually one of the first options in the flash sub-menu.
