I just want to get something that grabs on the pole, rail, or fence. Why they are sucked?

I used to have the Gorillapod SLR zoom (same as what you linked) but after some time several of the plastic sockets in the legs cracked, rendering it floppy and useless like an old man who's run out of viagra. Now I have the more expensive model, the Gorillapod Focus - the sockets are made from alloy and shouldn't be cracking any time soon. This thing is great because it fits in my camera bag, unlike my full sized tripod, so I can take it almost anywhere. They are really useful, but I will say that you often end up not being able to get the angles or perspectives that you want, and often have to settle for 'worms-eye-view' of the world. Still, better than nothing.
