Decently sharp, but the direct on-camera flash is not the best lighting. I would try using a piece of typing paper, or a napkin, as a literally, rolled-up-a-bit-and-cellophane-taped-on-to-the-hotshoe-area light diffuser. I think it would give better light for insects, and would be FUN on all sorts of close-up macro type shots. I've used the typing paper trick on many occasions, and white cheap napkins....pretty good really!
