I don't usually like the 2X TC, but this guy was a bit far for the 1.4X

Canon EOS 7D
Sigma 100-300mm f/4 + Sigma 2X TC @ 600mm Handheld (Didn't have my tripod with me this morning)

I like this photo. Again you are working in a very limited range of colors which I find very appealing. Funny how his eye matches the color of the plants.

The image is quite soft though. Is that the effect of the 2X? I don't use TCs but I keep reading that the 2Xs should be mostly avoided. Have you tried extreme cropping instead of the 2X? Some people seem to thing you get better results...

Yes, that is the 2X at work. I essentially never use it anymore, but had some ideas I wanted to try today -- they didn't work

I'm just going back to the 1.4 and cropping in the future, I think. I'm at work, so haven't put these up on my editing monitor yet, but I have a few with the 1.4 for comparison and will see which works better. In general, using a TC on a zoom is a crapshoot anyway, and I think I pushed my luck with the 2X.
