In the northern hemisphere, if the lit area resembles a "D" it is waxing, and if it resembles a "C" it is waning. I never thought about the difference in the southern hemisphere before . . .

Most Australians consider the UK as "over there" just like a trip over the hill, with the top of the hill being the equator....
