What's new

Have new DSLR; what kit do I need?

What about the liability or 3rd person type insurance?

If you stop at the traffic light, a car behind did not stop and rear end you. And the impact is strong enough for your car to bump the car in front of you. I am sure the driver in front of you will go after you, not the person who hit you, right?

It would be kind of silly for the 3rd party to go after someone who was hit in the accident. When there's a car pileup, you don't go after the person that hit you after you already crashed, you go after the person who initiated the pileup, right?

Yes you can, but there are cases I heard (even was told by the driving school instructor) the insurance company of the car which started the accident may not cover the car in the front. They claim that the car in the middle did not keep a good distance from the car in the front. So it really depends on the situation. You know how that goes with insurance. If they can find a way not to pay for a claim, they will.

Of course, I am not talking about major accident type situation where a semi crash into a pile of car.

this happened to my father. they asked questions to determine if the middle car hit him first and the rear car then hit them (2 collisions) or if he only felt one hit (car was hit and pushed). its all in how things are answered.

You have a car, but no insurance?

In America, you'd be ****ed if you got pulled over.

They just make you get insurance and pay a fine, then you get your license back.

Yeah, I am aware. We're talking about if you DO NOT HAVE INSURANCE. You would LOSE your license. It's one thing if you actually have insurance, but no proof of it. That's easy to take care of.

That's what I mean, there are a ton of people who do not have any car insurance. The judge would ask them, can you get insurance? With some people with bad driving history, the answer is no. They actually have a program here in Cincinnati that helps people get insurance. First time without insurance you either get a slap on the wrist or at worst a 6 month suspension. I think there are more people driving without insurance here in the US than you might think.

Oh yeah, I do not have insurance on my camera gear... if I had $20k pro gear I probably would, but not for my amateur stuff.

I recently got insurance on my gear. I have about 11k worth of gear. I got it through statefarm who does my car insurance also so I got a minor discount (like $20 off a year). It was like $160 or 170 per year cant remember (about $14 per month ). It has a $100 deductable and is slightly more expensive because it covers professional use ( basic policy non-pro would be like $20 less per year ) I am not a pro, but if I ever sell a photo or get published, an insurance company could always use that as leverage to not pay my claim, so I covered my @ss. The thinking is that pro use is more often and probably often times more risky to the gear than the average hobbyist.)

Hope this helps.

It sounds like an extra $20 a year is a good investment to get the pro coverage. I'll have to contact my car insurance company and see what my options are. I'm assuming that since I have far less equipment than you I will be able to get a cheaper policy/less coverage but even if I couldn't $14 a month and a $100 dollar deductible doesn't sound so bad.

Yeah, when I first called for just a rough idea, I told them I had 8k in gear and it was like $8-10 a month if I remember correctly. Then I bought a new 400mm and added in all my bags, and cards and filters and accessories (just incase my entirebag is stolen or destroyed ) and it adds up fast.

Talk about going off on a tangent about car insurance!!! The only thing I have actually bought so far for my new Nikon baby is a UV filter to protect that lens. I may have to look into insurance tho, seeing as I wouldn't be able to afford it buggering up on me! Where did you all get your insurance through??

Be careful.

When a camera/lens, or just the lens, is dropped, sometimes the UV filter used for 'protection' shatters and the shards of thin glass gouge and/or scratch the front lens element they were supposed to 'protect'.

Then the shattered filter has to be unscrewed from the front of the lens, which can cause even more damage to the front lens element as those shards get dragged across the dface of the front lens element.

Nikon D3100 and kit lens? I would not get too hung up on insurance just yet. I have about $5k in gear and do not carry any insurance.

What kind of shooting do you plan on doing? this will help us give you gear suggestions that are actually going to help you, not just sit in your bag collecting dust.

My first suggestion would be to carry your owners manual in your bag at all times.

You have not seen a tangent until you bring up UV filters and their usefulness in a thread....

My UV filter took a beating and the lens is intact... so yes a UV filter on the primary lens is good to have.

My 1st pick would be a decent flash, then id look into a 50mm 1.8 and a tripod; by the time you master all this you will know exactly what else is missing or lacking in terms of gear.

I definitely plan on getting a 50mm next, and then a good flash is next on my list. I do a fair bit of live music photography, which is something I definitely want to get better at, and it's quite different from the other kind of stuff I like to do, which is portrait kids photography and animals. I am borrowing my friend's SB 600 tonight for a gig, so I get to try that out and see if that's what I'd like to buy...
